New MRI Markers Help Diagnose MS Earlier
University at Buffalo researchers played a key role in an international effort to improve how multiple sclerosis (MS) is diagnosed. New consensus recommendations, published in Lancet Neurology, introduce advanced MRI biomarkers -particularly paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs)—that help clinicians identify MS more quickly and with greater confidence. PRLs are highly specific to MS and, along with the central vein sign seen on MRI, allow for earlier diagnosis and treatment initiation, which is critical because early therapy can slow irreversible neurodegeneration. UB’s team has led multiple studies on PRLs, showing their value in detecting ongoing brain inflammation and shaping future diagnostic criteria worldwide.
